In 2027, we can all look forward to a very Gollum Christmas. (That’s what you’ve been asking for, right?) The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum officially announced its theatrical release date today. The feature will arrive on December 17, 2027.

The Oscar-winning team responsible for the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy – Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens – produce Gollum. Walsh and Boyens are also writing the screenplay, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the previous films, will reprise his role in The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis will also step behind the camera for the film as the director.

Specific plot details about the movie remain scarce. But fans did get clarification from Boyens on the timeline at least.

“It’s quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria,” Boyens told Empire last fall. “It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”

Outside of Serkis’ return as Gollum, no other cast members have been confirmed for the movie. So, we don’t know if any other Lord of the Rings stars will make an appearance in the upcoming film.
