Love, Death + Robots is currently taking the world by storm once again with the recent release of Vol. 4. With that recentmost volume getting universal acclaim from critics, it’s no wonder that the anthology series is getting so popular again. In fact, it’s not the series itself that’s getting attention. It’s also the cast and crew behind the series.
That’s why we here at That Hashtag Show are proud to interview some of the voice cast behind Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4. This time, the spotlight will be on Sumalee Montano, Feodor Chin, and Emily O’Brien. You can watch the full series of interviews on YouTube or below:
Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4: Sumalee Montano, Feodor Chin, & Emily O’Brien | THS Interviews Highlights
Sumalee Montano
“I didn’t [do mocap]…the mocap…was all in my head while I was behind the microphone.”
Wow, now this is a revelation, because it means that the animators behind “Spider Rose” basically designed the scenes entirely around Montano’s voice acting without the benefit of any motion capture. Kudos to her for her amazing voice work.
“I’m so glad that I was able to be a part of making [Spider Rose] especially when the real world…there’s a lot of hard stuff going on.”
I think I can safely say that this is the most indirect criticism of what’s been happening in the United States we’ll get from these interviews. At least we can escape into another world away from this one for a bit thanks to the efforts of Montano.
“I was part of the very first season in an episode called ‘Good Hunting’, and now I’m back again…so my experience has just been amazing, and this time, getting to work with Jennifer Yuh Nelson…anytime we get to work with brilliant directors, it’s such a gift. But the fact that she’s a fellow Asian-American woman, I’m like, ‘Yeah! Double happiness!’.”
Word, Montano. We need more Asian-American women in acting and directing in Hollywood. Also, callback to our other interview with Jennifer Yuh Nelson.
“Fuck, yeah! I mean…I love my experience as a human, but I’m all about experiencing things, and if [being a cyborg is] another experience that I get to have, that sounds like not many people get to do that…I play all those [cyborg] characters anyways with my…voice acting, so I’m like ‘Yeah! I want to do that!’.”
Yet another fan of Signalis, perhaps? If there is ever an animated adaptation of Signalis, I do hop Montano might become a part of it.
Feodor Chin
“I was a bad guy and a good guy, which is rare that you get to do that…it’s a real treat.”
Indeed, that is a rare experience in voice acting to have, so we can thank Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4 for giving him that chance in “Spider Rose”.
“It was mocap and so I think we shot all of the lover stuff first and then we got into the…heavy bad guy stuff…so it was pretty easy to keep them separated.”
Okay, this is unusual. Chin is directly contradicting Montano on the mocap issue. Either one of them is incorrect, or Montano didn’t get to do mocap while Chin did? I do believe that we might need to get some clarification on this issue at a later date.
“I’ve done a fair number of mocap…there’s a couple of video games…there’s one coming out in the fall which I can’t actually say yet, but just keep an eye out.”
Well, this is fascinating news. We will just have to keep an eye and ear out for Chin’s voice work for any video games coming out in Fall 2025 then. All we know from Chin is that it’s not Final Fantasy, and that’s it.
“I guess clones only because…I don’t like jewelry and stuff…so a cyborg would be too much…I don’t want all that stuff on me.”
Alas, not a fellow Signalis fan.
Emily O’Brien
“Yeah, I’ve done [mocap] before. I love it. It’s my favorites. Comfortable suits. Use your imagination. You’re out there on the stage with other actors and you are just…free to play…it’s a great medium, I love it.”
Ohhh, this solves the previous contraction dilemma around the mocap. Clearly, whoever Montano was voicing either did not require mocap or mocap wasn’t possible for some reason. Still, at least Chin and O’Brien both enjoyed the mocap they did.
“No, I don’t think so. I hope I’m not around when that happens. I’m trying to get away from technology and away from robotics to be honest, so I don’t think so…unless my life depended on it…unless I would die if I had a bionic…whatever arm.”
Alas, we don’t have a Signalis fan in O’Brien. Well, two out of three isn’t so bad. We can certainly hope for a future in which one day, we can replace our fleshy parts with machine bits.
