Rick and Morty is something of a TV institution at this point. The show’s been on through so much on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. It got to the point that the network had the chance to make Rick and Morty: The Anime and really strike out on their own.

Despite being quite different from the original show in a couple of ways, this anime adaptation will amuse fans of Rick and Morty. The Blu-ray release for season one is a great way to get insight about all the decisions that led to this wild undertaking from adult swim.

Rick and Morty: The Anime Blu-ray and DVD

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment was kind enough to send That Hashtag Show a copy for review. It just dropped recently and has two hours and 10 minutes of wild anime action. Rick and Morty: The Anime began life as some shorts on the late night programming block. With the success of the larger series, adult swim’s parent company decided to up the ante with a full season of anime adventures starring their most famous modern characters. On Amazon, you can catch the Blu-ray release of Season 1 for $25.

That includes both English and Japanese dialogue. Two sets of casts on Rick and Morty: The Anime. 10 episodes complete the first season of the show. Rick and Morty completionists are probably going to be interested in what’s on offer here!

A Fan-Favorite Duo Switches It Up

Rick and Morty: The Anime begs one simple question: why make this an anime?  Well, because they can. The appetite around that style of animation has never been more voracious. Adult Swim takes full advantage of the trappings of Rick and Morty: The Anime.  There are space battles, and samurai occasionally. But also the team over at Adult Swim decided to dip their toe into both the tried and true Rick and Morty lore and something a little different.

The Smith family is here and there are nods to plenty of Rick and Morty mainstays. (Simulations, The Citadel, and specific entries from the regular animated series all play their part.) But, everything is at a slight angle that longtime fans will appreciate. It goes without saying, but if you enjoy Morty and his family’s development over the years, you might not be as into Rick and Morty: The Anime.

Space Beth, Jerry, Summer, and even Rick all get a much more rough sketch here. (In more ways than the animation.) Some fans of Rick and Morty like it a little better when it’s an adventure of the week. The later half of this season will appeal to viewers that like things to connect a little bit more. If you love this animated series, this might be worth a pickup if you’re into Anime as well. But, if those hurdles are too great, the main show starts up again soon!

What Is The Show About?

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment explains: “It’s life mostly as usual for the Smith family. Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl. And they’re all an anime.”
