Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep But Always Aim High” presents a truly monumental problem for Hotel Gingarou to overcome. That problem is how to advertise the hotel while also being able to defend it at the same time? As it turns out: the solution lies not on Planet Earth, but in the stars around it. Now if only they would tell us how it end, but that’s going to have to wait for the next episode.

This story is suddenly taking a turn for the sci-fi.

Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High” is the seventh episode (you can read my reviews of Ep. 1Ep. 2Ep. 3Ep. 4Ep. 5, and Ep. 6 here) of this postapocalyptic sci-fi comedy-drama anime series. Uniquely, this anime is an original series not adapted from any manga.

CyberAgent is producing the anime, with CygamesPictures (Manaria FriendsBrave Bang Bravern! The Summer Hikaru Died) as the animation studio behind it. Crunchyroll is the company licensing it for its global debut, as well as the company streaming it. Kana Shundo is the director behind the anime, with Shigeru Murakoshi as the writer.

See all those unbroken windows? Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone were to shatter them?

Alas, Apocalypse Hotel has only relatively recently started airing several weeks ago. In fact, Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High” only just aired on May 20, 2025. Thus, you all will get the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll to give you all a taste of the story without too much spoilers below:

“The gang decides to launch a satellite for promotion, but Ponko has other ideas.”

Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High”: The Good

It must be nice to get to experience space without needing things like air or food.

Honestly, it’s the story of Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High” that’s keeping my eyes glued to the monitor. All because it’s a weirdly realistic and detailed sci-fi story taking place under some pretty absurd circumstances.

What we basically have is a story of Hotel Gingarou trying to launch something into outer space both to advertise the hotel to aliens, as well as to provide some means to defend itself against one of their more hostile customers. Most anime would just handwave everything in order to move the plot along. While this anime does do a bit of that, they actually go into the nitty-gritty details of how to launch a rocket into space. Complete with weight issues being central to the conflict. No spoilers, but let’s just say that things like lift support systems, space suit, and even food for the astronaut can all increase the weight beyond acceptable levels. Taking them all out of the equation would lighten the load considerably.

Aside from the unexpected science though, we also have some just-as-unexpected yuri. Or at least, potential yuri. For me, this is a big bonus as a fan of yuri. Let’s just say that it involves a certain tanuki girl (voiced by Sumire Morohoshi) and a certain robot acting acting manager (voiced by Saho Shirasu). Granted, it looks like it will be unrequited yuri because one of the duo is not emotionally mature enough to understand romantic relationships. Still, there is some hope in the future for them, methinks, and it will be a long future indeed.

Especially with CygamesPictures continuing their usual high quality animation for this episode. Seriously, you can tell that this is a really well-animated anime. All the little details everywhere and in how the characters move just shows some serious animation flexing. A great example in this episode is an entire sequence of a weaponized satellite launching a tungsten rod down into the planet at high velocities, complete with an impressive nuclear-esque explosion. They didn’t need to animate that, but they did, and it’s a big part of why I love this show.

Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High”: The Bad

You know things are getting bad when Ponko is sad.

Alas, even an episode as great as Apocalypse Hotel Ep. 7 “Bow Down Deep but Always Aim High” has a noticeably big problem with it. That problem is the way it ends. It basically leaves you hanging in orbit in a monster of a cliffhanger. Yes, I’m well aware of that trope and how it’s used to keep audiences wanting to watch more next week. I just hate it in general, and especially if the cliffhanger is bad. Leaving someone hanging in the middle of an action sequence (or a disaster sequence in this case) is just iffy to me. It’s really only the rest of the episode that keeps me wanting to watch more next week.

Now as for other issues, if you like bloody action, then this episode isn’t for you. There is something in this episode like action. However, a highly detailed scene of a rocket launching into orbit (complete with stage separation) is not quite the same as an action fighting sequence. If you want that, then I would suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshuBlue BoxSolo Leveling, and/or the aforementioned Black Butler. Those anime should have more than enough action to satisfy your inner action junkie until Apocalypse Hotel surprises us with its own action sequence.
