Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 2 “His Butler, Sounding the Alarm” is basically a character exploration of our newest main character of the arc: Sieglinde Sullivan. Oh, and her butler Wolfram, but this episode is mostly about her as the resident witch of the castle. Complete with a good dose of supernatural mystery behind why she’s in that castle in the first place.

Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 2 “His Butler, Sounding the Alarm”: Synopsis

Her serenity hides an incredible amount of silliness.

Alas, Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- has only recently begun its airing. In fact, Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 2 “His Butler, Sounding the Alarm” only just made its streaming debut two days ago as of this writing. Thus, here’s the official synopsis from Crunchyroll to give you an idea of what’s going on without too much in the way of spoilers below:

“Wolfram installs the group in the Castle. Ciel and Sullivan sit down to dine, only to receive shocking news.”

You can tell something is funny when Ciel is disturbed.

There’s really no doubt that the story of Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 2 “His Butler, Sounding the Alarm” is the best part about it. Heck, you only have to look at everything Sieglinde does in this episode to see proof of that. Yana Toboso’s is partly a very dark fantasy horror, but as this episode shows, the other parts of it are the most ridiculous comedy you will ever see in any anime. Sieglinde is just a little gremlin, and her interactions with Ciel borne of a combination of curiosity and a complete lack of understanding of human social interactions combine to produce comedy that crosses the line twice, and will make you sputter with outraged laughter.

And it’s not just Sieglinde either. Her butler Wolfram gets a notable amount of comedy as well, particularly in how he interacts with Sebastian. Let’s just say that Wolfram has a very interesting idea of how to cook, and it infuriates Sebastian. There’s really no doubt that the comedy is the star here. All while some very dark fantasy happens towards the end to boot.

Of course, that comedic story wouldn’t nearly be as good without the effort of CloverWorks. Their animation team continues to produce an animation quality on par with feature-length anime films. Especially in the food department. Seriously, one look at the food Sebastian presents will have your mouth watering. You can fully understand then why Sieglinde would stuff her face full of that food.

The silliness cannot be denied.

Alas, Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 2 “His Butler, Sounding the Alarm” is not quite an action-packed episode. There is a moment of bloody violence towards the end of the episode. However, it’s more played for horror than it is a typical action sequence. If you want that, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshuBlue Box, and/or Solo Leveling? Those anime should have more than enough action to satisfy your inner action junkie.
