Mamoru Hosoda is quite possibly one of the most famous Japanese anime directors in the world. Seriously, he’s right up there with Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai. If you’ve ever watched The Boy and the Beast (2015), Mirai (2018), and Belle (2021); then you will be familiar with his work. In fact, for those particular three films, Hosoda is not only the director, but the writer as well. Thus, you’re getting Hosoda’s entire vision under his Studio Chizu animation studio.
And now, we will soon be getting a fourth anime film to add to that list. Sony Pictures is proud to announce that Mamoru Hosoda will make his fourth Studio Chizu anime film with the upcoming Scarlet. This latest of his anime films will make its theatrical debut on December 12, 2025. In fact, its premiere will be exclusively in theaters on that date, so you will have to wait a while for the streaming debut.
That’s not all though. Sony Pictures also has a new teaser poster to hype up Scarlet and to tease the plot a bit. Judging by what we see in that teaser, this will be Hosoda’s bloodier anime films. You can check out that teaser poster below:
Scarlet by Mamoru Hosoda to Premiere in Theaters in December 2025

Alas, we have no other information other than that. However, the teaser poster tells us quite a bit about Scarlet. I mean, just look at those mountains of bloody corpses the main character is standing on. Clearly, this is going to be one of Mamor Hosoda’s bloodier anime films, if not his bloodiest. Likely action-packed too, with the main character just carving a bloody path through her foes. Honestly, this makes me quite eager to see it. It will be quite interesting to see what kind of action film Hosoda will come up with, and in such dissonant clothing to boot.
