Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout” continues the vignette trio format that this anime is so fond of for its slice of life segments. This time though, it includes some serious character development of side characters in the most hilarious way possible. Not only that, but we even get to see one of the new main characters of the anime in all of her kitty-cat glory.

Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout”: Synopsis
Alas, Witch Watch only recently began airing a couple weeks ago. In fact, Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout” only just made its debut two days ago as of this writing. Thus, we shall be giving you the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll to tease the story without too many spoilers below:
“Nico and Morihito’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Makuwa, is a secret manga otaku. Her favorite series is “Uron Mirage,” also known as “U.M.” One day, she hears that one of her students, Kukumi Ureshino, a.k.a. Kuku, has been posting U.M. fanart on her Chitter. It seems like she has 10k followers and some of her art has gone viral. And as Ms. Makuwa predicted…”
Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout”: The Good

The story of Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout” is why I’m loving this particular vignette episode. Mostly because it goes very deep and very hard into the mindset of your average rabid fandomer. I’m serious. Fans of a particular media tend to go the way of Yūri Makuwa. They find as much fanart of their favorite media as possible, and then go on rants about that favorite media. Headcanon may or may not be in there, but becomes much more likely the more vague the story is. All those loose ends begging to be tied up and all, you know. It’s this kind of realistic depiction of a hardcore fan from Kenta Shinohara that made me laugh for much of the episode.
Not only that, but this episode also features some noticeably better animation than in previous episodes. For some reason, Bibury Animation Studios stepped up their game for this episode. Part of it the reason for this is due to the sudden animation changes, especially during the Uron Mirage depictions. They really went hard on that classic shonen art style for those covers. It’s that dedication to the manga within the manga/anime that’s also why I’m loving this episode.
Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout”: The Bad

Alas, even though Witch Watch Ep. 5 “My Student is my Favorite Artist / My Tummy is Tender Today / Cat Scout” is a step up from the usual animation, you can still see inconsistencies in the quality here and there. Inconsistencies such as beautifully drawn eye in the same scene as unevenly drawn buttons on their blouses. Fortunately, the inconsistencies here are smaller than usual, and need a watchful eye to catch. Thus, it gets less flak from me this time.
Alas though, this episode is sorely lacking in blood and action. It’s just not that kind of show. If you want that, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II, Zenshu, Solo Leveling, and/or Black Butler? Those anime have enough blood and/or action to more than satisfy any inner action junkie.
