Skybound and Image Comics’ next G.I. Joe Silent Missions one-shot is here. Today, G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1 hit local comic shops. Created by Wes Craig (KayaDeadly Class), with colors by Jason Wordie (The Energon Universe miniseries Duke), this is the fifth of five all-new Silent Missions one-shots. For those not familiar with the Silent Missions, they are an action-packed story with no dialogue. Thanks to our friends at Skybound I was able to get an early look at this comic to review.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1 is the fifth of five all-new Silent Missions one-shots, each releasing on a Wednesday this April, from a murderer’s row of creative talent also including Phil Hester, DANI & Dan Watters, Leonardo Romero, and Andrew Krahnke. In celebration of Silent Missions month, Skybound will also be releasing a “Silent Missions” edition of the historic “Silent Interlude,” G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #21, which includes a new letter from Larry Hama.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1 – The Review

OK, for those that read my reviews know I like to keep them short, simple, and Spoiler-free, but G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1 is a little different because there are no words. But even though there are no words, the pictures tell a powerful and action-packed story. As you turn each page, the art and colors set the mood of the story. You can see and feel the emotional toll this mission is taking on Duke. It is bad enough that he has to deal with COBRA, but this mission also hits him personally. Like the other silent issues, I found myself getting into each panel and telling the story in my head, how I thought it would be written. Wes Craig and Jason Wordie did an amazing job telling an action story with no words.

Now, this comic won’t be for everyone. If you are the type of person who has to have words in front of them to enjoy the story, this isn’t for you. But if you love to tell a story through pictures and are a huge G.I. JOE FAN, then you will want to pick up a copy of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Duke #1. While I am a fan of this format, I do have to take a little away from the no dialogue, this one-shot stays on my must-read, or should I say must-look list.
