You would think “Godzilla” and “sumo” are two words that would never go together, right? After all, one is a kaiju created by Toho Co. which has become a global icon. The other is a famous Japanese martial art form featuring sumo wrestlers wrestling with each other with the goal of pushing each other out of a ring or shoving them into the ground within the ring. Neither of them has any sort of relationship with each other. That is, until now.
Toho International and Worldwide Sumo are partnering up to bring the legendary Godzilla into the Super Power Show!. How, you might ask? Well, apparently, they plan to “fuse the unstoppable force of Godzilla with rich Japanese tradition and the excitement of modern pop culture fandom”. Beyond that, the how is a bit vague at the moment. I guess they want to keep that a surprise until the big event. All we know so far is that the event will include:
- Sumo Wrestling Exhibitions featuring former professional sumo wrestlers from Japan, Mongolia, and Brazil
- Live Music Performances
- Taiko Drumming & Shamisen Performances
- Japanese Marketplace with authentic food, drinks & artisan goods
- Exclusive Merchandise
- Surprise Guest Appearances
Fortunately, that won’t take long to confirm at all. The Super Power Show! will show off the Godzilla fun on Friday, July 25, 2025 and Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 5:00 PM in San Diego, CA at Petco Park’s Gallagher Square. However, that won’t be the only occasion. The show will then head on over to New Jersey at American Dream Mall on Thursday, August 1 at 5:00 PM, Friday, August 2, and Saturday, August 3 at 11:00 AM & 5:00 PM for a repeat event. You can purchase tickets for both shows now directly at wwsumo.com.
Godzilla and Sumo Going Worldwide in the Super Power Show!

Now this is certainly a collaboration few would’ve predicted, myself included. I have no idea just how Godzilla and sumo fit together. Will there be a costumed Godzilla actor throwing hands with a sumo wrestler? Will we see the king of monsters clad in a sumo’s loincloth and topknot? Who can say? Still, if you’re a fan of either Godzilla, sumo, or both, then this might be the event for you.
What do you all think? Are you excited to see Godzilla throwing down with sumos? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
