Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is out now, and the title suggests it might be the franchise’s last. Tom Cruise has been playing the role of Ethan Hunt for nearly 30 years, and moviegoers are wondering if he’ll survive. Warning: Major spoilers for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ahead!
Cruise fans can breathe easy because Ethan makes it out of the film (mostly) unscathed. As always, the character has multiple close calls. He nearly explodes, drowns, and comes close to falling out of a plane. However, Ethan once again proves he’s the “living manifestation of destiny,” and that destiny is to keep fighting on. Thankfully, Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) also makes it out alive despite getting shot. However, some characters in The Final Reckoning aren’t as lucky, including one beloved franchise staple…

Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames)

Ving Rhames is the only actor aside from Cruise to appear in all eight Mission: Impossible movies. Sadly, his time playing Luther Stickell has come to an end after three decades. It hurts to see him go, but if you watched the trailers, you may have guessed it was coming since he’s wearing hospital scrubs and looking sickly. The movie does confirm that the character is ill, but they don’t go into detail. In classic Luther fashion, the character goes out saving an entire city from a bomb.
After Gabriel (Esai Morales) locks Luther in an underground cell with a bomb, Ethan finds him hard at work dismantling the deadly weapon. Luther says he can stop it from destroying the city by containing the blast to the underground tunnels. Unfortunately, Luther has to stay behind and set it off manually. It’s a heroic ending, but if the franchise does continue, it’ll be hard to watch without Luther. He’s truly the heart of these films.
Rest in peace to Luther Stickell AKA the Net Ranger AKA Phineas Freak.
General Sidney (Nick Offerman)

The eighth Mission: Impossible marks the franchise debut of Parks and Rec alum Nick Offerman. The actor plays General Sidney, who works closely with President Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett). The U.S. has the most power to fight The Entity, and the president must decide whether or not to launch nuclear weapons. Knowing the death toll in other countries will be high, she must consider killing an entire U.S. city to balance the scales.
After Sloane’s decision is made, Sidney borrows a firearm from a soldier on security detail. It seems as though he might kill the president if she doesn’t follow through with the plan. However, when Sloane decides not to launch the weapons, an agent in the room pulls a gun on her. Sidney gets shot while saving the president from her attacker. He dies a hero and quickly becomes a memorable addition to the franchise.
Gabriel (Esai Morales)

Esai Morales joined the M:I franchise as Gabriel in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. The character serves as a liaison to The Entity, which makes him a big problem for Ethan. The two men face off in the previous film and have another big showdown in the newest installment. Fans can always expect huge stunts from Cruise, and Final Reckoning‘s biggest comes in the form of an airborne biplane.
Ethan and Gabriel battle in the air for quite a while before our hero becomes victorious. In the end, Gabriel’s death is one of the best of the franchise. As he’s about to fall from the plane, he smugly reminds Ethan that he’s the only one with a parachute. However, he never gets the chance to open it. Instead, he flies into the rudder and is impaled in the face. It’s satisfying to see Gabriel go out that way, especially since he killed Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in the previous film.
While plenty of other “red shirts” die throughout The Final Reckoning, the biggest death scenes go to Luther, Sidney, and Gabriel.
