While AI has been a hot topic in the real world for some time, Tony Stark has been using artificial intelligence as a tool to conduct his work in the Marvel Universe for decades. But since his tried and true digital companion J.A.R.V.I.S. made the transition from the digital world to became the hero known as Vision, True Believers have been introduced to a number of other AI assistants created by Iron Man including F.R.I.D.A.Y. (who was activated when Ultron seemingly destroyed J.A.R.V.I.S.) and Karen (the user interface of Spider-Man’s suit). Now, it looks like another one of Stark’s creations is returning for the upcoming Disney+ series spotlighting Paul Bettany’s synthezoid superhero. However, a different performer is stepping into the role this time around.
According to Deadline, Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire will play E.D.I.T.H. in the WandaVision spinoff following the White Vision. The highly sophisticated AI system was first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Far From Home when Peter Parker was given a pair of his mentor’s sunglasses after Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Standing for “Even Dead, I’m The Hero,” Spidey soon realized that these glasses and their augmented reality interface were the key to accessing Stark Industries’ global network of peacekeeping satellites that contained an arsenal of weapons and drones. Young Parker was manipulated into granting Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio access to E.D.I.T.H., which led to an attack on London and the world learning the true identity of the web-slinger. Aside from a brief mention in Spider-Man: No Way Home, E.D.I.T.H. has been inactive… until now.

Previously, the character was voiced by Dawn Michelle King, who typically works at the House of Ideas as a first assistant editor on projects such as Iron Man, Thor: The Dark World, and Ant-Man. But with the role likely being expanded in this show that may or may not still be called Vision Quest, Marvel is bringing in a more experienced actor for the part. Aside from appearing in the beloved sitcom from Dan and Eugene Levy as Rosebud Motel owner and operator Stevie Budd, Hampshire worked on the Canadian animated series Anne of Green Gables that also aired on PBS, Prime Video’s supernatural thriller series The Rig, and the upcoming Vince Vaughn feature Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice. This casting also marks a reunion between her and showrunner Terry Matalas, who created the SYFY series 12 Monkeys where she starred as Jennifer Goines from 2015 to 2018.
While Marvel Studios has declined to comment on the casting, Hampshire joins a cast that already includes Bettany and James Spader, who reprise their roles as Vision and Ultron respectively, T’Nia Miller as bride of Ultron/eventual Avengers ally Jocasta, Todd Stashwick, and Ruaridh Mollica. Additionally, Faran Tahir is also set to return to the MCU for the first time since Iron Man, where he portrayed Ten Rings leader Rasa.
