A prequel to the events of FIrst Blood are coming soon. John Rambo is hitting our screens again with a prequel from Millennium Media. They’re known for the Has Fallen films, Hitman’s Bodyguard, and Expendables. Deadline was first with the news that the prequel is being shopped at the Cannes Film Festival.

Director Jalmari Helander (Sisu, Rare Exports) is set to direct a script from Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. They want to start production this October in Thailand. The plot of the film is under wraps, but it’ll be an origin story for the cinematic icon John Rambo during his time in the Vietnam War. Throughout the Rambo series, we got glimpses of what went on, but never more than that.

Here’s the kicker, Sylvester Stallone is aware of the project, but isn’t currently involved in any capacity. The producers are open to including him if the opportunity arises.

Producers on the latest installment are Kevin King-Templeton on behalf of Templeton Media, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger and Avi Lerner. Executive producers include Trevor Short, and Bonfire Legends’ Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk.

Here’s what Millennium President Jonathan Yunger had to say.

“We are thrilled to introduce a fresh new chapter to the Rambo legacy. This project is a tribute to one of the best franchises in movie history that will appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike. With Jalmari Helander at the helm — a filmmaker of exceptional vision and energy — we’ve found the perfect director to deliver a high-concept action-packed experience.”

John Rambo and First Blood was created by author David Morell in his original novel of the same name. The 1982 action-classic saw Sylvester Stallone take the role and make it his own. That film was a landmark for not only showcasing the plight of Vietnam vets reintegrating into society but for action movies in general. it set the standard for runtime and pacing that would continue to this day. The Rambo franchise has generated over $800 million at the box office across five movies.
