Carey Mulligan is heading through the wardrobe and into Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia film at Netflix. THR was first with the news that Mulligan is in negotiations to join the movie in a key role. Netflix is backing the film and it’ll be taking on the sixth novel in the series, The Magician’s Nephew. Greta Gerwig wrote the script and is directing the film.

The film is deep into casting right now with Mulligan joining Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Meryl Streep in the project. They’re casting the young leads right now.

The Magician’s Nephew is a prequel to The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. It follows two youths who, thanks to an uncle’s magic, unleash the White Witch on 20th-century London. Craig is set to play the Uncle, Mackey the White Witch, and Streep is voicing Aslan. Carey Mulligan will play the sickly mother of Digory, one of the two youths in the adventure. It’s a deep role that’s based on author C.S. Lewis’s own mother, so she should have plenty to work with.

The film is getting a two-week theatrical run in late 2026, which is unusual for the streamer. It’ll take up IMAX screens during that time.

Carey Mulligan is one of the most accomplished actresses working today. She’s a three-time Oscar nominee for roles in Maestro, Promising Young Woman, and An Education. She recently starred in the smash Saltburn and Spaceman.

The Narnia film from Greta Gerwig is among the most anticipated with her coming off the massive success of Barbie that reinvigorated a movie box office that was decimated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
