We have now entered the age of the video game adaptation for movies and TV. Minecraft took the box office by storm recently and other movies like Until Dawn, Sonic the Hedgehog, and others have made it very profitable for video game adaptations. Now, according to Deadline, Sydney Sweeney and Michael Bay are teaming up to produce a film based on the classic video game series OutRun. Bay is attached to direct the film with a script from Jayson Rothwell. It’s unknown if Sweeney will star in the film in addition to producing or not.

Bay will also produce alongside Brad Fuller through their company, Platinum Dunes, for Universal Pictures. The project is in development right now. Toru Nakahara will also produce the film for SEGA, and Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.

The plot details for the film are vague at the moment, but it should follow the basic premise of the classic game. The original arcade game from the 1980s pioneered the driving/racing genre. It also created the subgenre of electronic music called “OutRun.” There have been several new installments in the series, including home console ports, and is one of the most successful Sega franchises out there.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Universal is no stranger to video game adaptations at the moment with their success with the Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights At Freddy’s, which both dominated the box office to the tune of more than $1.6 billion combined. Michael Bay has been busy in recent years including producing A Quiet Place: Day One, Ambulance, and more. Sydney Sweeney is one of the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood with roles in movies like Immaculate, Anyone But You, and an upcoming Christy Martin biopic.
