Someone call Seth Rogen’s character from The Studio. There is a Toys ‘R’ Us movie in the works from Story Kitchen and Toys ‘R’ Us Studios. Variety was the first to report the news.
Here’s what Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg had to say about the film.
“Toys’R’Us is a cultural touchstone that continues impacting the child in all of us today. As ‘80s kids who considered Toys’R’Us one of the most magical places on Earth, we’re honored to partner to create a film that will capture the spirit of adventure, creativity and nostalgia that Toys’R’Us represents.”
The film is in early development and doesn’t have any cast or crew attached. It aims to capture that childhood wonder in a modern, fast-paced adventure that taps in the Toys ‘R’ Us brand across 70 years in the toy industry. Here’s what Kim Miller Olko, President of Toys ‘R’ Us Studios had to say.
“As Toys’R’Us’ first film, this project is an exciting opportunity to bring the magic of our brand to the big screen. It will be a journey as boundless as play itself, evoking the electric sense of wonder that is the essence of Toys’R’Us. This story will capture the imagination, adventure and joy that has made Toys’R’Us a destination for kids of all ages.”
What Would A Toys ‘R’ Us Movie Even Look Like?

The project is described as like Night At The Museum, Back To The Future, or Big, but with toy influences like Jumanji or Barbie. That sounds like a pretty inventive and open narrative. The producers are engaged in preliminary conversations with filmmakers and actors.
Story Kitchen helped bring Sonic The Hedgehog to the big screen, they’ve also worked on the Tomb Raider franchise, bringing the animated TV series to Netflix. They’re working on Just Cause at Universal, Ruiner for Universal, Streets of Rage for Lionsgate, Toejam and Earl for Amazon MGM Studios, and SIFU for Netflix. So they have a bit of a pedigree when it comes to non-standard IP coming to movies.
